Thirteenth Step

By Bruce Clifford

(Written during a recent business trip in New Orleans)

You’re the thirteenth step in my twelve-step program
The hardest step to climb
You don’t know me like you could
I wonder if you’ll ever try

I’ve be wandering these roads down on Bourbon Street
Waiting for the beads and parades
You’re the thirteenth step in my twelve-step program
This one final step is when we’re saved

Do you ever wonder what could be?
Do you ever dream about a new destiny?

You’re the thirteenth step in my twelve-step program
Only the strong survive
Many pages in our history
Can we get out of this thing alive?

I’ve been waiting for the day the tide would change
Some say I might have lost my mind
You’re the thirteenth step in my twelve-step program
You’re my favorite person day and night

The first step I took is when time stood still
The second step took all of my will
The third step came right out of a dream
The fourth step was the eternal extreme
The fifth step came when life was dark
The sixth step took me to who you are
The seventh step found me looking in
The eighth step eliminated my mortal sins
The ninth step was high but not too deep
The tenth step I took I landed on an empty street
The eleventh step was one I needed to climb
The twelfth step told me I nearly arrived

The thirteenth step is the loneliest step to climb
The thirteenth step never knew I arrived

You’re the thirteenth step in my twelve-step program
The only step I never climbed
I’ve been watching the void down on Bourbon Street
It's as if they were flooded by the tides

I’ve been waiting for the chance to save this world
But peace on earth is so hard to find
You’re the thirteenth step in my twelve-step program
Get me out of this thing alive
Get me out of this thing alive
Get me out of this place alive
