Waiting for Tornadoes

By John I. Blair

Waiting for tornadoes
Watching for wind,
Rain, hail
This stormy night.

Anticipating darkness,
I light candles,
Pursuing the illusion
Of preparedness.

But I don’t feel safe,
For in my heart I feel
That darkness laughs
At candles.
