Jewels of Opar
By
John I. Blair
When first I found
This misty flare
Of minute pink flowers
And red fruit
I thought to say
“This can’t be real”,
This vegetative miracle
Springing up unbidden
In the garden’s wildest spot,
Half-hidden, protected,
Beside cracked bricks
From Mexico,
Rare beauty in the mud
Of my back yard.
But isn’t that the way
With beauty?
More beautiful
If unexpected,
But always there.
