In Love with Flowers

By John I. Blair

Why am I so in love
With flowers and gardens?
Easy answers won’t do:

Sweet smells, bright
Hues, soft shapes –
This goes beyond.

Something in a garden
Bonds my soul again,
Moves me near to ecstasy,

Reminds me that my tissue,
The stuff of which I’m formed,
Is not that far from garden stuff,

Not that far from stamens,
Anthers, petals, stems, roots.
Oh I’m made of stars too;

But flowers are closer,
Flowers and leaves and seeds.
I need them as communion every day.
