Sunlight

By Connie A. Anast

(April 2000)

She walks out into the dampened sunlight
Full of courage and ready to take on
and take in
the World
At her pace, fast and steady
Enveloping the citrus summers
And autumn exquisite, hopeful
Running through her parents warnings
And her hearts yearnings
Running into him

Not who she expected
But full of courage and ready to take on
and take in
her love
At his pace, fast and steady
Fumbling through deliciousness
And breathing in his essence
She sets the gift on his doorstep,
Full of incredible fear,
And then runs the other way
Fast…
and steady

She drinks alone now
Drinks in her backlit regret and her consequence
She aches in her dreams
To walk in the dampened sunlight again
and tell him all that she stood witness to
…to wipe clean the fruitless doubt
If she could dissolve the years
And blow them high to the wind
She may just take it
At her new pace, slow and easy
And change the world.
