“Small Crane For Hire”

By John I. Blair

“Small crane for hire.”
That’s what the sign said
On the edge of the road
Near a water-filled ditch.
Conservationists know
For a species to thrive
They have to show
It can pay its own way.
But wasn’t this tough?
After all, in a pinch,
What’s a small crane to do,
Go out and fetch fish?
