Hawk

By John I. Blair

A thump outside my window
Makes me look quick,
Just in time to spy
The sharp claws, hooked beak.

No meal today;
But scattered feathers
Early in the week
Testified a keen eye,

A lightning swoop.
And I am implicated
In the deed, my diligence
Dumping finch and dove feed

Not merely giving sustenance
To smaller fowl
But fostering this killer
In her bloody need.
