The Tree

By John I. Blair

Joyce Kilmer put an odd demand

On poetry when he made it stand

Against a tree and found it wanting.

But Archibald MacLeish has said

“A poem should not mean but be;”

And what it be is not a tree

(Although successful poetry

May need the sacrifice of a tree

In order to get to a library).
