Butter Would Not Have Melted In My Mouth

By John I. Blair

“Butter would not have melted
In my mouth”
I said,
So cool had I remained
In conversation with a man
I neither liked nor wished to talk with.

But then I thought,
So easily does butter liquefy
From living body warmth,
If butter will not melt within my mouth
I might be dead.
