Mantra Ray

By Clara Blair

Great arrow shape
Glides through the water
In tangible silence,
Gathering sustenance
As it overtakes the
Microscopic in its path.

Cavernous maw
Consumes without teeth.
Cousin of sharks,
Kin of the skate,
Winged traveler of deeps,
Not shallow currents.

Meditating, I see you,
Moving with massive grace
In the blue of my dreams,
Leading me in a dance
Until you turn
And swallow me.

Like Jonah,
I’m caught
But do not drown.
Inside his whale’s darkness,
Did Jonah see
Millions of stars?
