A Single Feather

By John I. Blair

One day as I was wandering
From the car into the house,
I found a single feather on the walk.

I could see that it had fallen
From a bluejay’s wing or tail,
The form and color unmistakable.

I was curious how the feather came there;
Was it loosened by a sudden swerve
In flight, adjusting for a gust of wind?

Mayhap was there a leaping cat
Or plunging owl, clutching at the jay,
Snatching it, imperiled, from the air?

But question as I might, the feather
Would not spell causality, nor tell
Me more than that a feather fell.
