Rowboat

By John I. Blair

Someone who is always looking back

Is like an anxious rower in a rowboat,

Always facing where he started,

Striving so hard, straining with such might

To rush away from what he seems to dread,

He rarely looks at where he’s headed

And plunges toward an unexamined future

That may not be much different from the shore he fled.
