Some People Say Life Begins At 40

By John I. Blair

Some people say that life begins at 40,
Some say your warranty expires then.

I hold with neither of these camps.

Life begins when it begins, ends when it ends,
And every day, hour, moment in between
Is as if it were the only one,
The first, the last, the worst, the best.

This instant is the one reality
That I can know;
And if I hurt or hunger,
Wake or rest,
Repent, rejoice, laugh or cry,
I’ll go on living till I die.

This is a gift I didn’t earn
And will not spurn.
