High School Sweethearts

By Clara Blair

(For Leah & Bill Fairchild)

Light and shadow,
Photographs and
Old home movies
Show two people,
Special to each other
Through many years and seasons.

High school sweethearts,
Posing with friends
And cousins in
Glorious black and white,
Skating carefree
In a small-town rink.

From the rough hills
Of Oklahoma
To the small towns
Of Kansas,
Side by side
They travel together.

Surrounded
By teachers and farmers,
Raised to value family
And respect hard work,
They’ve kept the faith
Of their ancestors.

Two youngsters,
So serious and sober
On their wedding day,
Have grown into
The heritage
Of this land.

Fifty years later,
Still together,
Their house is filled
With family and
Memories, blessed
By time and love.

Her mother’s mantle
Of hospitality
Fits her well.
His father’s strength
Has passed on to
Three sons.

The years of marriage
Rest lightly on them.
Fifty is a good start.
May there be many more,
With health and happiness
For these high school sweethearts.
