God’s Rat

By Clara Blair

(For Rev. Kit Howell,1951-1996)

Gnawing at the knot of Rationalism
Like a God-blinded rat,
You insisted upon reality,
Giving us yours but knowing,
And telling us,
We'd have to find our own.

Pouring out your vision,
Embarrassing us with your pain
And your salvation,
You made us see ourselves.

Chewing up our excuses,
You left us only our choices.

With small, considered nibbles
And great, impatient bites,
You ate through the walls
We'd carefully built
To keep out hurt and hope.

Kit (Webster Kitchell Howell) was a remarkable man whom John and I were privileged to know at the beginning of his much-too-short ministry.
