Elephant Recall

By M. Jay Mansfield

The Eagle remembers daintily
Unlike the giant elephant who held by twine as a calf
stays bound by it in his aged days

The Eagle transcends the old...
not out of disrespect ...
because the old was his path to the new...

He flies past the old because he needs to feed his mind...
he needs to be more...
even if he has to be less...

Yes he gains power as he relinquishes his own...
He gains...
Constantly he gains...

Though losses sadden him...
He travels on...
Often just chasing another ray...
Chasing, until it is gone...

Mind open, he races into the wind...
gaining on tomorrow...
growing on yesterday...
never being more than today...

The Eagle learns from folly of the pachyderm...
he doesn’t laugh...
he only flies farther on...

Looking for his perfect place to burn...
Face to face...
wings to air...
eyes to sun...
