Wishing

By John I. Blair

If my wishes came true would that be good?
How can I know what I really need,
How can I possibly foresee
What my wants will truly be
Tomorrow or the following day?

What I wish is often just food
For hunger or fear or lust or greed
Or some other sort of empty space.
So I’d rather take fortune full in the face
And welcome whatever comes my way.
