False Blossom

By Clara Blair

Hummingbird approaches the Japanese maple in August,
Confused by the bright red seed pods it bears.
No nectar here, but the product of stamen and anthers,
Fruit of the pollen and sweet enticement of time past.

Nearby the vermilion anisacanthus and scarlet salvia
Offer solace to the disappointed bird.
Their season is now, and they freely offer their gifts,
As do the other sages, basil, ruellia and abelia.

But true love knows no season, and the woman knows
Beauty in all seasons in the eyes of her lover,
Who will hover like the hummingbird, not confused
And still finding nourishment in her smile.
