In High Summer

By John I. Blair

In high Texas summer
Heat slams down
Like a crock pot lid,

Sealing me in to simmer
Slowly in my own sauce,
Breathing a toxic option.

So I don’t go out.

At this point my intent
Would be to praise the name
Of Willis Carrier;

But it doesn’t match
My poem’s meter; thus
I’ll honor him in cool stillness,

Chilling beneath my A/C vent.
