Trails

By John I. Blair

Every living thing
With power to move
Will make a trail.

Some are delicate –
Sparrow feet
On pale snow,

Some broad –
An alligator’s tail
In marsh mud.

It takes
A bloodhound’s nose
To sniff out paths in air,

But tracks in history
(Rarely odor-free)
Are much easier to follow.
